Hi. Good question. When talking about homeowners being underwater it refers to those homeowners who owe more on the mortgage than their home is currently valued at. For example if a homeowner purchased a home for $570,000 3 years ago with a mortgage amount of $55,000 and the home in the current market is valued at $475,000, than that homeowner is “underwater”. When you see homes listed as a short sale, this is the same situation. The homeowner is selling their home for less than the mortgage amount they currently hold.</description>
